This matcha chai latte recipe is the best of two worlds - matcha lattes and chai lattes.

I absolutely love both of them on their own, but I was hesitant to combine their distinct flavors.

Earthy matcha. Spicy chai. Both are robust.

I couldn’t see how it would work, but I still needed to try it and I’m happy I did.

Are chai and matcha good together?

Surprisingly, yes.

Not only is this chai matcha latte incredibly easy-to-make and ready in minutes, the matcha chai combo is unique, comforting, and refreshing.

It’s an intriguing blend of earthy, spicy, and slightly sweet.

It tastes like it’s from a fancy coffee shop, but this homemade version is cheaper and healthier.

You also don’t have to leave the house, wait in line, wear real pants, etc. It’s my favorite way to get a caffeine boost.

What is a matcha chai latte?

It’s the flavorful combination of matcha tea, chai spices, black tea, and creamy frothy milk.

I love to drink it iced. But, I always drink iced coffees and teas… even in Blizzards. 😂

It can easily be warmed up in a small saucepan on the stove, in the microwave, or with a milk steamer (like on an espresso machine).

A hot matcha chai latte is a wonderfully cozy drink on a cold day.

Simple Ingredients

You only need four ingredients to make a homemade matcha chai latte - matcha powder, water, your milk of choice, and chai concentrate. Ice cubes are optional.

Matcha

For the matcha part of this latte, I recommend using a high quality matcha green tea powder.

Matcha powder is made by grinding down green tea leaves into a fine powder.

The antioxidant-rich powder is widely known for its health benefits. To read more about them, check out Healthline’s “7 Proven Ways Matcha Tea Improves Your Health”.

To keep this recipe budget-friendly, use a premium culinary grade matcha. There is no need to use an expensive ceremonial grade matcha.

You can learn more about the differences in grades and how to choose a high quality matcha in Best Matcha Cookie Recipe, Iced Matcha Latte Recipe, and/or Matcha Brownie Recipe without White Chocolate.

I’ve been using this RISHI Organic Everyday Matcha Powder or this Jade Leaf Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder to make a green tea latte or this Matcha Coffee every morning.

I’m happy with both of them and plan to buy them again.

Water

Warm or hot water is used to prepare the matcha powder. Do not use boiling water though. That can cause the matcha to become more bitter.

The best way to combine the water and matcha is with an electric milk frother.

I recently bought this battery-operated milk frother / matcha whisk and it’s AMAZING. I even use it to perfectly blend my protein shakes. It makes everything easier and free of clumps.

If you don’t have one, you can use a traditional matcha whisk or a mason jar by adding the matcha powder and water to it, putting on the lid, and shaking vigorously.

This is also an easy way to create a frothy top on the mixed latte.

Milk

This matcha chai latte recipe can be made with any dairy or non dairy milk.

For less calories, I recommend using almond milk or nonfat milk.

For a creamy latte, it’s best to use oat milk or whole milk.

I have never tried this recipe with soy milk or coconut milk, but those are options too.

Chai

This delicious recipe uses chai concentrate, which is available in most grocery stores or you can make your own chai concentrate from chai tea bags.

If you want this matcha chai tea latte to taste similar to Starbucks’, I recommend using Tazo Classic Chai Latte Concentrate.

To make your own, check out - How to Make Chai Concentrate from Tea Bags.

Healthy Matcha Chai Latte

As mentioned above, matcha is known for its health benefits. According to Healthline.com, “Matcha contains a concentrated amount of antioxidants, which may reduce cell damage and prevent chronic disease.

To read about the other benefits of matcha, check out Healthline’s “7 Proven Ways Matcha Tea Improves Your Health”.

The spices used in chai concentrate or a chai tea bag, also come with their own health benefits.

According to Healthline.com, “The chai tea ingredients ginger, black pepper, cinnamon and cloves may help reduce nausea, prevent bacterial infections and support proper digestion.

This matcha chai recipe also uses less sugar than coffee shops.

The only sweetener is in the chai concentrate.

If you make your own chai concentrate at home with tea bags, you can control the exact amount of sugar that is in this recipe. You can also use a more natural sweetener like maple syrup or honey.

With a store-bought chai concentrate, the sugar is already added. For example, a 1/2 cup of Tazo Classic Chai Latte Concentrate has 16 grams of sugar. It lists cane sugar and honey as ingredients.

Tazo does sell a Skinny Chai Latte Concentrate that includes 8.7 grams of sugar in a 1/2 cup.

Does matcha chai have caffeine?

Yes, it has caffeine from both the matcha powder and the chai concentrate.

This chai matcha latte is made with 1 1/2 teaspoons of matcha powder.

If you would like less matcha or less caffeine, you can easily reduce the recipe to 1 teaspoon of matcha powder.

According to“Matcha vs. Coffee: Which Is Healthier?” on usnews.com, “A 1/2 teaspoon of powdered matcha has about 20 to 39 milligrams of caffeine.”

So this matcha chai latte recipe, as written, has 60 to 117 milligrams of caffeine from the matcha.

The amount of caffeine in the chai concentrate can vary. According to Tazo.com, their classic chai concentrate contains “61+ mg” of caffeine.

They do offer a Decaf Chai Latte Concentrate though.

If making a homemade chai concentrate from tea bags, the amount of caffeine depends on the type of chai tea bags used and individual preparation methods.
