We are celebrating #MentalHealthMonth this May by looking towards the experts and researchers of the topic, including Charlotte Farewell, PhD, MPH. As a Ludeman Center awardee, Dr. Farewell began her project 'Mindful Moms to Be' designed as a mindfulness-based intervention among a sample of low-income pregnant women living in Colorado. With her focus on maternal mental health (depression, stress, and anxiety) during the perinatal period, she has contributed to women's mental health by fostering their resilience and promoting wellbeing.https://lnkd.in/ghs38i7q

#InstaliveMore than 1 in 10 women get affected by PPD in the first year after childbirth. It's important to reach out for help as these symptoms can last for months and thus have an adverse effect on the well-being of the new mother and baby.Giving this phase of low feeling a cute name like "Baby blues" doesn't make it simpler to manage.Lack of awareness, lack of social support, and even the void in the medical system to address maternal mental health after childbirth makes it difficult for women to understand and navigate this challenge. Tomorrow, on the 4th episode of the Embracelife Live, my guest is a vocal maternal mental health advocate. A lawyer by profession , a mother, and a social media influencer, Shreya Mitra, is highlighting this unaddressed under diagnosed mental health crisis for mothers everywhere.Join me and @raising_shaan at 2 pm IST on 24th May 2023 and be a part of this much needed priority plan.We at Embracelife want to support all clinical evidence based holistic healing sciences that could benefit people , health professionals, and policy makers into making informed decisions.#embracelife #consciousliving #mindbodyconnect #holistichealing #maternalhealth #mentalhealth #postpartumdepression #support #community #evidencebasedmedicine #integrativehealing #depression

May is #MaternalMentalHealthMonth, a crucial time to raise awareness and foster a culture of understanding and support for mothers everywhere. Did you know that up to 80% of new mothers experience postpartum blues, commonly known as the "baby blues"? This temporary condition usually begins three to five days after delivery and can include mood swings, sadness, and anxiety due to hormonal changes. However, if these feelings persist beyond two weeks, it could be a sign of postpartum depression (PPD), which affects about 10-20% of new mothers and requires professional support.Dialogue's video helps share insights on postpartum blues and offers support for maternal well-being. This initiative aligns with the efforts of organizations like Postpartum Support International and TheBlueDotProject, which aim to end the stigma surrounding maternal mental health and provide crucial resources and support.Join us in spreading awareness and supporting the mental health of mothers. Watch the video and learn more about how we can all contribute to a supportive environment for new moms.Check it out: https://okt.to/7j8hLz

As we observe #WorldMaternalMentalHealthDay, it's crucial to shine a light on the pressing issue of maternal mental health disparities – particularly among women of color. The statistics are stark: according to the Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance, approximately 40% of Black mothers and birthing people experience maternal mental health concerns. However, black women are less likely to receive treatment. Additionally, women of color face significantly higher rates of maternal mortality and morbidity compared to their white counterparts. In the face of this crisis, it's imperative to ensure that maternal mental health services are not only accessible but also culturally sensitive and comprehensive. Integration of key components into maternal mental health services can play a pivotal role in addressing this crisis.Following are components of care that I have integrated into my practice to help address and mitigate perinatal mental health concerns among women of color. It is my hope that by taking a multifaceted approach, I can continue to do my part to help address the maternal mental health crisis. On this #WorldMaternalMentalHealthDay let us commit to advocating for policies and practices that prioritize the mental well-being of women of color and ensure that no mother is left behind.

My world was turned upside down in December 2018 when I became a mom; not only because it was such an incredible transition in my day-to-day life, but also because I am one of the 20% of mothers who experience a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD). May is #MaternalMentalHealthMonth and as I reflect on my own postpartum experiences, I think the hardest part was acknowledging what I was going through and finding the time, space, and energy to ask for help. It's easy to come up with excuses: 🚫 Everyone tells me that it's supposed to be hard.🚫 [Fill in the blank person] seems tohave it under control.🚫 I'll feel better once I've slept / eaten / showered.🚫 My baby needs me to be 100%. I don't have time for this. These excuses are reinforced by the way our society treats new mothers. Abysmal maternal health outcomes. Nonexistent or limited postpartum medical support. No paid family leave. Social norms that can discourage partners from playing an equal role. Constant judgement and struggles around feeding, including a complete lack of support for breastfeeding and a complete lack of accountability for a safe and strong formula supply chain. The list goes on (and on, and on...). I view this month as both a chance to create open conversations about maternal mental health and, hopefully, drive some meaningful changes to help new mothers feel supported. Let's ensure all moms have access to the resources and support they need to thrive. If you or someone you know is struggling, I encourage you to visit Postpartum Support International:https://lnkd.in/gDFEmmQW.

Disproportionate rates of pregnancy-related and perinatal mental health challenges affect Black women. Yet, they are the group least likely to receive follow-up treatment. It's time to change this narrative and ensure that every woman receives the care and support she deserves. Mental health is an often underlooked part of the fight for Birth Justice and Equity, but it is a vital part of maternal health care. Black women are much more likely to suffer from perinatal and postpartum mood disorders than other women. They are also less likely to have access to mental health care, forcing them to suffer in silence. #PPD #maternalhealth #birthjustice Use the links below to learn more about this issue, and what can be done about it.
