New episode! The Connection Between ACHING JOINTS and ESTROGEN http://ow.ly/74TI50IvXK6It’s no secret that there is a connection between menopause and hot flashes, but there are many other symptoms that are consequences of a lack of estrogen beyond night sweats, vagin*l dryness, and bone loss. And joint pain is definitely on that list. So, what is the impact of menopause on arthritis and joint pain? Is estrogen therapy the answer? In this episode I am joined by Dr. Stephanie Faubion, the Director of Mayo Clinic’s Center for Women’s Health, chair of the Department of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, the medical director for The Menopause Society and the author of The New Rules of Menopause: A Mayo Clinic guide to perimenopause and beyond . @WHMayoClinic @MayoClinicGIM @menopause.org

#DYK that menopause can affect body composition and cardiovascular risk in women? Recent research suggests that vasomotor symptoms might be a novel, independent, female specific risk factor for cardiovascular disease. It is key to broaden the perspective around the impact of #menopause – during and beyond - and that is why the International Menopause Society has called out the theme for this year’s World Menopause Day being “Cardiovascular Disease”.At #TeamBayer we are working in collaboration with leading scientific, academic, and industry partners to improve our understanding of cardiovascular disease and find innovative approaches for patients. A new study suggests that race matters when prescribing Hormone Therapy for those going through menopause. Black patients have more severe symptoms, are receiving less treatment, and prescribed Hormone Therapy at a lower rate than White patients. “Black [patients] should have the same access…to the available treatment options… this study reinforced that [we] must ask patients about their specific symptoms so we can discuss the options that could help improve their quality of life.” - Dr. Faubion, medical director for The Menopause Society. These results will be presented during the 2023 #MenopauseSocietyMtg.

Heart disease is one of the biggest causes of death in women. I recently attended the BMS conference with a brilliant talk highlighting the importance on preventing heart disease around menopause. Lifestyle intervention is key. HRT plays a vital part especially in those who go through an early menopause or surgical/ medical menopause, as they are more likely to develop heart disease. One key learning point for me is how women present with high blood pressure and heart disease- We are taught at medical school what 'typical' questions to ask- 'Do you have chest pain?', 'shortness of breath?', 'palpitations?'. BUT did you know that many women present with 'atypical symptoms' and one of these is 'a bra feeling tight', with no explanation. How many women do I see in my GP clinic with this symptoms and we presume it must be breast tenderness or costochondral pain. It is vital to measure blood pressure in these women and have cardiac disease as a differential. #britishmenopausesociety #menopausesupport #menopauseeducation #berkshire #marlow #womenshealthexpert #gynaecologist #womenshealthdoctor #menopauseadvice #menopauseeducation #gynaecologyclinic #caversham #buckinghamshire #womenshealthclinic #henleyonthames #southoxfordshire #berkshireuk #berkshiremenopauseclinic #menopausespecialist #womenshealthcare #menopausedoctor

Did you know all of these myths/facts?! Read my blog post for the full details: https://lnkd.in/gNbydenSHere are a few more…Most women experience menopause between the ages of 45 and 55 years as a natural part of biological ageing.Menopause is caused by the loss of ovarian follicular function and a decline in circulating blood oestrogen levels. It is not possible to predict when an individual woman will experience menopause, although there are associations between the age at menopause and certain demographic, health, and genetic factors.Menopause can also be induced as a consequence of surgical procedures that involve removal of both ovaries or medical interventions that cause cessation of ovarian function (for example radiation therapy or chemotherapy).

A new study suggests the length of a woman’s reproductive period (menarche through menopause) has been linked to adverse health effects including cardiovascular disease and mortality. Study suggests it can also lead to a decline in muscle mass strength as defined by handgrip strength. Sarcopenia, projected to affect 72.4% of those 65+ by 2045, is concerning as it can lead to reduced physical capability, decreased quality of life, and increased metabolic diseases. Study results are published in the Journal of The #MenopauseSociety, “The association between reproductive period and handgrip strength in postmenopausal women: a nationwide cross-sectional study.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/g8WFkejd.

Did you know cardiovascular risk can rise after women go through menopause?According to new findings presented at the American College of Cardiology's Annual Scientific Session women’s cardiovascular risk rises sharply after they go through menopause quickly catching up to men of similar age and health profile. This study indicated that after menopause, women have much less estrogen and shift to a more testosterone-heavy profile,". "This affects the way our body stores fat, where it stores fat and the way it processes fat; it even affects the way our blood clots. And all of those changes increase our risk for developing heart disease. It is important to encourage post menopausal women to visit their doctors, talk about heart disease risk factors, and follow up on recommended tests.
