    Some games do better than other games on Twitch, in terms of viewership, etc. Typically, single-player/narrative-style games will chart like a shark's fin (rise sharply, flatten, and fall). Conversely, multiplayer games with high "replayability" tend to start slower, but the tail rises over time and stays lofty (often, for many years). Neither observation is likely much of a surprise, if you think about it. However...ANY genre of game can take off, build a community, and maintain relevance...just by prioritizing one key suite of KPIs. I'm going to solve this mystery for you (because it's not much of a mystery)...it's all about: #Engagement. There's a media buzzword for you...engagement. It means everything, it means nothing...right?Well, let's put a finer point on it then: for #GameDevelopers, one of the most impressive engagement cheat codes...which by proxy becomes a community-building and monetization cheat code as well...is the "Twitch Extension."An extension on Twitch...well, think of it as an interactive app that viewers and creators engage with during the stream. This can be as simple as a voting mechanism (Ex: streamer asks chat if they should choose the red or blue armor). But it can go so...so much deeper than that. Enter Thomas Tuts.Maybe you've heard of #CultOfTheLamb, the surprise hit from Massive Monster. Or perhaps you're familiar with this li'l title from Larian Studios that just came out called #BaldursGate3.Both have massive engagement on Twitch...and both have extremely clever, deeply integrated extensions on Twitch...which are enabled by streamers, and enjoyed by viewers. Both were built by Thomas Tuts. Ultimately, every game has a shot at finding and building their community on Twitch...some games will have it easier than others - but EVERY game has a shot. That extra jolt a game gets from fun, interactive tools like those for #CotL and #BG3 can make all the difference.     👀 🎮 There is a direct correlation with the number of viewers certain multiplayer games get on Twitch, with the number of concurrent players there are in the the game itself.If there's not consistent organic engagement by content creators for your competitive game, it's likely suggesting there isn't enough happening to captivate them.When you're not investing time and money in developing an ALWAYS-ON strategy with content creators you're essentially letting your game fail. Some titles have strong enough communities to keep them interesting and engaging, but with so many games now monetising audiences constantly, the pressure is really on to keep a title worth coming to.

Another, even better thing is when your players make a lot of videos about the game: that translates into organic i.e. free users.We recently ran a closed pre-alpha for our upcoming game.     Are in game ads and in app purchases a good long term bet still?Everything has cycles, and subscriptions are trending again, we can see that content streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ are continuing to enable people to consume content at a chosen fixed cost. Xbox Game Pass is similar, and for gaming it's not difficult to see the glory days of Free to Play gaming, with ads and IAP are likely behind us.Not to say they are over, as ads and IAP clearly still work, there are still massive outliers that make $ millions, yet people are becoming more familiar with consuming digital content via fixed costs and no ads than ever before, putting other models at risk in the long term.The hyper and casual game market is saturated, and I'm hearing from more friends than ever before that subscription services and upfront costs are preferred, as it results in designing a game for play and joy, rather than addiction and in app purchases.What do you think? I think those teams exploring a focus on making games as part of a subscription or fixed cost, with additional add ons in the future, will be the winners of 2024 and 2025, though who really knows?#success #creativity #futurism #gaming #
