Sioux City Journal, Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003-A9 OBITUARIES Merle C. Smith Merle C. Smith, 83, of Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in Sioux City following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. James United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bernie Colorado officiating. Graveside services will be at a later date.

Visitation will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present, at the church. Christy-Smith Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Merle Clifford was born Dec. 21, 1919, in Pierson, Iowa.

He later moved to Sioux City and graduated from East High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an aerial photographer. He was wounded at Saipan and given a medical discharge in 1944. On July 26, 1941, he married Jacqueline Stroupe.

He worked at Chicago Northwestern Railroad as night mail foreman. He later started his own business, Smith Floor Janitor. In 1970, the Veterans Administration told him he could no longer work because of his disability. He volunteered his time to help others. The DAV (Disabled American Veterans) put a Watts line in his home so he could talk to veterans across Iowa.

Gov. Robert Ray appointed him to the Iowa Commission for Persons with Disabilities, where he served 20 years and received the Distinguished Service Award. Merle founded the Siouxland Committee for the Handicapped. In his effort to lower transportation costs for the disabled, he served on the city Transit Board. For three years he traveled to Washington, D.C., and served on President Carter's Committee on Transportation.

Merle was an active member of St. James United Methodist Church, holding almost every position from teaching Sunday school to being head usher. He was a member of the Morningside American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans of Sergeant Bluff. Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline; two children, Merlyne Smith of Sioux City and Michael Smith and his wife, Vicki of Wadena, two grandchildren, Christine and Daniel; and three sisters, Elma and her husband, Bob Steckelberg, Marge and her husband, Dean Stoll, and Norma Law. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha Law.

Memorials may be directed to St. James United Methodist Church in Sioux City. Roger Bouquet SOUTH SIOUX CITY Roger Bouquet, 91, of Marshalltown, Iowa, formerly of South Sioux City and Ponca, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in Graceland Park Cemetery in Sioux City.

There will be no visitation or funeral service. Becker-Hunt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Bouquet was born Nov. 23, 1911, in Salix, Iowa, the son of Arseme and Alida (Lussier) Bouquet.

He married Dorothy E. Nelson on April 18, 1938, in Sioux Falls, S.D. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. The couple resided in Ponca and operated a barber and beauty shop.

They moved to South Sioux City in 1945 and established Bouquet Department Store, which they operated for 20 years. They then built Bouquet Apartments in Jackson, Neb. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Omadi Masonic Lodge and the Shrine. Survivors include a son, Donovan Bouquet of Lakeview, a brother, Rene Bouquet of Tulsa, a sister, Betty Engel of Springfield, three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His wife, Dorothy, preceded him in death on Jan.

12, 1996, in Sioux City. Marian R. Larsen Marian R. Larsen, 81, of Sioux City died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Naples Community Hospital in Naples, Fla.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m.

Manchester on May 31, 1940, in Omaha, Neb. The couple resided i in California for many years. Her husband, William, died April 11, 1960, in Compton, Calif. She moved to Sioux City in 1970. She enjoyed reading mystery novels, antiques and being with her nieces and nephews.

Survivors include two sisters, Laura J. (Lefler) and her husband, Charlie Kruse, and Frances Jones, all of South Sioux City; a brother, Troy "Bud" and his wife, Georgia Graves of Omaha; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Fred; and three sisters, Venus, Cora and Mary. Dennis L. Bracy Dennis L.

Bracy, 39, of Harris, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in Osceola County Hospital in Sibley, Iowa. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Turner Funeral Home in Lake Park, Iowa. Burial will be in Union Township Cemetery in Harris.

17, 2003, at Kingsley Nursing Rehab Center. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Congregational United Church of Christ in Kingsley, with the Rev. Robert Blair officiating. Burial will be in Kingsley Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley. Ivy was born May 30, 1903, in rural Kingsley, the daughter of Robert and Reike Atkinson. She was the youngest of Robert and Reike's five children.

Her father, Robert Atkinson, died when Ivy was 3 years old. Later, her mother, Reike, married Edwin Page and they made their home in Kingsley. Ivy graduated from Kingsley High School. On May 10, 1970, Ivy married Oscar Swanberg. They were married 64 years until Oscar's death on Dec.

2, 1984. After their marriage, they lived in rural Kingsley, Wagner, S.D., and Merrill, Iowa, before buying a and moving back to Kingsley. Ivy and Oscar were the parents of four children. Ivy was a member of Congregational United Church of Christ and Elkhorn Farm Women's Club. She loved the outdoors and working with her flowers and gardening.

She and Oscar loved dancing, reading and they spent 17 winters in Texas. She was truly loved by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Survivors include two sons, Max Swanberg and his wife, Betty of Crooked River Ranch, and Bob Swanberg and his wife, Jerri of Prole, Iowa; two daughters, Shirley Jensen and her husband, Lauris of Kingsley, and Phyllis Bruning and her husband, Darrell of Lawton, Iowa; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Clyde L. Mullen was born Jan. 20, 1917, in Gernse, Iowa, the youngest of 10 children. He married Georgia Bateman on Aug. 11, 1989, at the Methodist church in Onawa.

They were blessed with 12 years together. They enjoyed dancing, traveling, playing cards and being with their friends and family. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife, Georgia; a sister, Enda of Brooklyn, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. Dwayne Franzkowiak SCHALLER, Iowa Dwayne Franzkowiak, 69, of Danbury, Iowa, formerly of Schaller, died Friday, Jan.

17, 2003, at his home in Danbury. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fratzke Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller, with the Rev. Patrick O'Kane of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Schaller. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

John H. Den Herder SIOUX CENTER, Iowa John H. Den Herder, 91, of Sioux Center died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Sioux Center Community Hospital. Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m.

Monday at First Reformed Church of Sioux Center, with the Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Burial will be prior to the service in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Sioux Center. Visitation will be 2 to 3:30 p.m. today, with the family present, at the church.

A family service will be 12:30 p.m. Monday at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center. John H. Den Herder was born to Gerrit and Henrika (Te Grotenhuis) Den Herder on July 5, 1911, in Sioux Center. John went on to farm in the Sioux Center area his entire life.

He was a progressive farmer who supported new developments in agriculture. John was united in marriage to Daisy Heynen at her parents' home on Oct. 17, 1934. To this union six children were born. John's family was especially important to him.

He enjoyed spending time together, and especially with his grandchildren. Daisy preceded John in death on Feb. 23, 2002, after 67 years of marriage. Over the years John had been active in community affairs. He developed and served on the original Sioux Center Land Development Board.

He also served on the board of Farmer's Co-op Society. Daisy's and his love for music led him to sit on the board of the Sioux County Concert Series. John was a devoted member of First Reformed Church of Sioux Center where he served on the consistory for many years. John had a passion for horses that began in his youth. He especially liked training and racing Standardbred horses.

Survivors include five children and their spouses, Garold and Donna Den Herder of Sioux Center, Wanda and Leroy Intveld of Hull, Ron and Janet Den Herder, W. Dale and Karen Den Herder and Donna and Dennis Walstra, all of Sioux Center; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Janice Sandbulte of Luverne, a brother and sister-inlaw, Alvin and Katherine Den Herder of Sioux Center; a sisterin-law, Elizabeth Den Herder Sioux Center; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by his son, Leroy Jay Den Herder; two granddaughters, Debra and Sandy Den Herder; his parents; two sisters, Alydia De and Jeanne Den Herder; and three brothers, Elmer, Gordon and Kenneth Den Herder. Donna was born March 31, 1928, at Sioux City, the daughter of Leonard and Ethel (Glann) Francis. She was raised in Climbing Hill and graduated from Climbing Hill High School in 1945. She was a secretary at Oakland Army Base, and later worked as an X-ray technician at Denver, Colo.

After moving back to Sioux City, she worked at Farner Bocken Co. She married Erwin "Pete" Waddell on July 24, 1954, at Sioux City. The couple farmed at Bronson until retiring to Moville in 1996. Pete passed away May 22, 1999, at Moville. Donna was a member of Elliott Creek Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her children, Stanley and his wife, Lynda of Peoria, Julie McNaughton of Kansas City, Janie and her husband, Bill Sparr of Anthon, Iowa, and Bryan of Sergeant Bluff; five grandchildren, Christopher, Lyndsey, Brianne, Jill and Jennifer; a brother-in-law and his wife, Francis and Joan Waddell of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and eight nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and brotherin-law, Betty Jean and Bob Devine. Pallbearers will be Charles Widman, Doug Rush, Tom Ullrich, David Devine, Dennis Devine and Dean Rasmussen. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland. Marjorie Timmerman CHEROKEE, Iowa Mar- jorie Timmerman, 82, of Cherokee passed away at 9 a.m.

Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at her home following a brief illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee, with the Rev.

Ray Hampton ofofficiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

There will be a family prayer service 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Marjorie was born July 15, 1920, at Odebolt, Iowa, to Irvin and Elizabeth (Konradi) Raasch. She married Raymond Timmerman on Jan. 8, 1942, in Cherokee.

She and her husband farmed in Pilot Township and raised Purebred Polled Hereford breeding stock for 53 years, retiring in 1994. The couple moved to Cherokee in 1994. Marjorie was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening and helping her family on the farm.

Survivors include three daughters, Beverly Klingbeil and her husband, Harlan of Le Mars, Iowa, Linda Dye and her husband, Jim of Dodgeville, and Cathy Eischen and her husband, Leo of Cherokee; a daughter-in-law, Veronica "Roni" Timmerman of Cherokee; a brother, Ray Raasch and his wife, Betty of Odebolt; 10 grandchildren; and seven greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond on Jan. 18, 2001; a son, Larry Timmerman; a brother, Willard Raasch; and a sister, Dorothy Beuhler. Eldred L. Ruth Jorgensen STORM LAKE, Iowa Ruth Jorgensen, 78, of Storm Lake died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness. Services will be 11 a.m.

Monday at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery, Storm Lake. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with the family present, at Sliefert-Asmus Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Veteran actor Crenna dies at age 76 Crenna said Saturday. "This came very sudden," she said. Crenna's role on the CBS drama series "Judging Amy" was recently put on hold as he battled cancer. "He was one of the brightest, nicest, funniest and 1 most talented actors I've ever worked with." Sylvester Stallone said Saturday. "He was everyone's Crenna often played tough guys on screen, but at home he rarely lost his sense of humor, his family said.

"Even after 46 years, he had me laughing, even in the hospital," his wife, Penni Crenna, said Saturday. Born in Los Angeles, Crenna's career began at the age of 10 when he broke into radio. The squeaky-voiced youngster appeared on "Burns and later, he played love-sick teen Walter Denton on "Our Miss Brooks," moving with the show when it switched to television. "For the first 20 years I was almost exclusively a radio actor until television came in," Crenna told The Associated Press in 1999. "In those days, radio actors were considered actors who could talk, but they couldn't walk and talk at the same time." LOS ANGELES (AP) Richard Crenna, the Emmy award-winning character actor who starred as a lovesick teenager on "Our Miss Brooks" and Sylvester Stallone's Green Beret mentor in the "Rambo" films, has died.

He was 76. Crenna, whose credits also included "Wait Until Dark."
