I'm trying my hand at setting up a local networking group for entrepreneurs; small business owners and skilled freelancers in Epsom and the surrounding area. The group is called the Small Business Co-Llab and it's about collaborating and connecting within the local community. I've made Associate at the Portrait Masters!I began taking photos at nine years old, but I didn’t do a proper qualification in photography until 30 years later! I used photography during my Art A Level; Art Foundation and Fine Art degree, but it was never something I really had a handle on beyond point and shoot and hope for the best. Obviously, all those hours and thousands of images I took taught me lots subconsciously, about composition and interaction and capturing moments, but I felt I was missing out on not really knowing how I was doing it. So, when I was pregnant with Child No 3, I took a Professional Photography Course and learnt how to use my camera properly. I then spent the next 10 years honing my craft, using my family and children as my target practice.When I discovered the Portrait Masters Awards in 2020, I thought I would submit to see how I fared. I didn’t expect to get any awarded photographs at all, but I was pleasantly surprised when my images made the grade, meaning my ‘work was of high professional standard’. When you work in an industry where anyone can set up as a photographer, you can feel a bit of a fraud, so I was pleased to get an endorsem*nt, from such a prestigious academy.I then decided to work for my Associate so I could become an Accredited Member of the Portrait Masters. Yesterday, when I realised it would be Women’s Day today, I ummed and ahhed about how I would address it. I actually wanted to put pictures up and comments on every woman that I respected; loved and had impacted me. But what if I left someone out? And how was I going to trawl through an archive of images in an hour?The answer came as always, from my champion friend, Kelly Chandler. Late last night, she drove by with a parcel for me. She wasn’t going to stop, ‘But it’s for our day tomorrow,’ she smiled as she handed it to me. I was very confused. Had we arranged something I had forgotten about?‘You know, OUR day. Women’s Day.’So many times, I have thought I am where I am because of Kelly. She picked me up, a lonely, friendless 14 year old, in French class, where we bonded over our desire to win the Australia Competition to visit Ramsay Street. Since then, she has trailblazed her way through life, acing school – literally the top pupil – university, mastering French, travelling extensively; setting up and running a super successful business for the past 20+ years, raising her own individual; independent; intrepid daughter, all the while supporting and championing every other woman in her life. Along the way she led a path to my current career: encouraging me to do the same secretarial course; to work in the same temping agency; then later, she introduced me to Rebecca Price who gave me my first photography assistant job and was so generous with her knowledge and support. Kelly booked my first branding shoot and then my first family shoot. She set me on a path that has led me where I am today.I am so blessed to have some truly fabulous women around me, some from day dot, to those I have been acquainted with more recently. All have had their own personal struggles, as we do in life, but all come out stronger and fiercer than ever before. Do not underestimate the effect you have, with a comment; a skill; an action. You have impacted my life for the better. So thank you; thank you, all. So many people are scared of having their photograph taken. I don't think phone photos help - whenever I do a phone selfie, I am invariably disappointed.
