CCL September Update - Central Wisconsin News (2024)

The Colby Community Library (CCL) invites all to visit the library in September.

Passports

Turn in your “Adventures Begin at Your Library” passports by Friday, Sept. 6, to any Clark County library for the drawing on September 20. Winners will be notified if their passport was drawn for gift card prizes to use in Clark County.

Library Card Sign-Up Month

What is free and allows a person to borrow hundreds of dollars worth of items annually? A library card. Stop in the library during September to sign-up for a card. Children and adults will find new books, magazines, movies, audiobooks, music CDs, and more. An assortment of “I Love My Wisconsin Library” stickers are also free to patrons.

Book Clubs

The first book club sessions will be Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Members will discuss the book “The Four Winds” by Kristin Hannah. Lisa Brill will be the discussion leader during the evening session.

Book club members do not need to purchase books. The library orders copies to pick up each month.

Craft and Hobby

Join crafters and hobbyists on the third Friday of the month for Craft and Hobby night. Bring individual projects to work on in the company others. The first evening will be Friday, Sept. 20. Doors open at 4 p.m. Bring snacks to share.

Bingo

Adult/teen movie or book BINGO cards will be accepted until Friday, Dec. 27. There is still plenty of time to read books or view movies for a chance to win Abby/Colby Chamber certificates.

Take and Make Crafts

“Take and Make” craft kits for children continue to be available, free of charge. This month, young crafters are invited to be creative while making clothespin scarecrows, squirrel magnets, sticker art, leaf gnomes, or fall mosaics.

Save our Story Times

Popular times for CCL story times are currently being surveyed. Pre-school children ages two and up are invited to join for stories, songs, poems, activities, and crafts. Stop by the library or call (715) 223-2000 to sign up.

1,000-4,000 Books

The beginning of the school year is a great time to start a child’s reading adventure with the CCL’s 1,000 Books Before (the end of) Kindergarten program. Reading binders are available to record books checked out from the CCL. At each 100 books completed level, children choose a prize. When reaching the 1,000 book level, a travel reading pillow and book is awarded. Due to parent requests, we have 2,000, 3,000, and 4,000 Books Before (the end of) Kindergarten binders also available. All these programs promote child literacy and help children hear the recommended 21,000 words each day.

Antique Appraisals

Mark Moran, antiques appraiser from Iola, Wisconsin, will be here Saturday, Sept. 14, to appraise precious heirlooms from 1-4 p.m. You must pre-register to bring an item to this event. Forty time slots are available. The public is invited to attend to watch the appraisals. There is no charge, due to the generosity of Joan Roth Laabs. Light refreshments will be served. Mr. Moran is the author or co-author of more than 25 books on antiques and collectibles. He was a guest expert with the PBS program, Antiques Roadshow, for nine seasons.

Adult Education Classes

Throughout the year, the CCL will host educational classes for adults. The first one will be on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. in the Community Room at the CCL. Kari Jensen, from Aegis Therapies, will present “Living with Arthritis.” Jensen will discuss three conditions: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout, including risk factors and ways to manage each type. The class is free.

Register September 16 - October 4 for a class hosted by the Friends of the Colby Community Library. “Wisconsin Mosaics” will be taught by Brandee Benson on Saturday, Oct. 19 beginning at 10 a.m. The cost of the four-hour class is $55. There are 20 spots available. Call the library to register and arrange for payment.

Fall/Winter Hours

The hours at the CCL are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from noon - 7 p.m. Beginning Saturday, Sept. 7, the CCL will be closed on Saturday and Sunday for the fall and winter. Saturday hours will resume for the summer in June-August. The library will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2 for Labor Day.
